What are the options after 10th?
Most students in Maharashtra choose one of three streams for Std 11 and 12, and some take a diploma or vocational route instead. Each one keeps different doors open.
- Science — Physics, chemistry, maths and biology. Leads to engineering, medicine, pharmacy, architecture and the pure sciences, among others. It is demanding, so real interest matters more than marks alone.
- Commerce — Accounts, economics, business studies and maths. Leads to B.Com, BBA, BMS, CA, CS, banking, finance and management.
- Arts (Humanities) — Languages, history, psychology, political science and more. Leads to law, psychology, design, media, teaching, the social sciences and civil services preparation.
- Diploma and vocational courses — Polytechnic diplomas and ITI courses lead to technical work sooner, and a diploma can lead on to an engineering degree through direct second-year admission.
What are the options after 12th?
- After Science — Engineering (through MHT-CET or JEE), medicine and allied health (through NEET), pharmacy, B.Sc., architecture, and newer fields such as data science.
- After Commerce — B.Com, BBA, BMS, CA, CS, CMA, and courses in banking, finance and management.
- After Arts — BA in many subjects, the five-year law degree, design, journalism and media, psychology and social work.
- Changing direction — Many courses after 12th accept students from more than one stream, for example management, law, design and media. A stream choice is important, but it is rarely final.
How to choose: questions worth asking
- Which subjects does the student enjoy, not only score well in?
- What kind of work do they picture themselves doing day to day?
- How do they learn best, and how do they handle pressure?
- What does each route cost in time and money, and which entrance exams does it need?
- Is the choice really theirs, or are they following friends or family expectations?
How Gurukey helps
- A free guidance visit — Come to our Warje office with your child. A counsellor listens, explains the options and the entrance routes, and there is no obligation to book anything. Request a free visit
- Online assessments — For students aged 16 and above, our Personality and Emotional Intelligence assessments give a structured starting point for the conversation. See the assessments
- Swa-bodh session — An in-person session at our office in which a counsellor takes you through a profile report and talks through stream and career choices. About Swa-bodh
When to start
Earlier is easier. Many families start thinking about streams in Std 9 or during the Std 10 prelims, so the decision is not rushed after the results.
For Std 12 students, entrance exam registrations open months before board results, so it helps to plan during Std 11 or early in Std 12.
Talk it through with a counsellor, free.

Frequently asked questions
Is the guidance visit free?
Yes. The first guidance visit at our Warje office is free, and you are not obliged to book any test or session.
Does my child need to take a test before choosing a stream?
No. Many families decide after one conversation. An assessment helps when a student is unsure what they enjoy or is torn between two options, and the counsellor will tell you in the visit whether one is worth taking.
Can we come from Pimpri-Chinchwad or elsewhere in Pune?
Yes. Families visit from across Pune and Pimpri-Chinchwad. If travelling is hard, choose "Call me instead" in the form and a counsellor will call you. You can also call us on +91 96375 96629.
What should we bring to the visit?
Recent mark sheets help, and so does a short list of the subjects the student enjoys and any careers they are curious about. Ideally both the student and a parent come.
